Shipping Hedgehog By Air We ship all of our hedgehogs from the Kansas City (MCI) airport, which is about 125 miles north of our home, and our closest airport that accepts live animal shipments. Airlines that we are able to use include Continental, American, Northwest/Delta. Since 9/11, inflationary gas prices, and airline mergers, shipping has become increasingly expensive and complicated, but thankfully not impossible! We are able to ship hedehogs all year long, depending on availability of flights and temperature. During the summer, there is a heat embargo on all airlines except Continental, since they are already using temperature controlled vehicles and handling procedures at each step along the way to ensure transfer of animals between flights is comfortable and efficient. Delta/Northwest offer this when the temperature is above 85, but charge about $80 extra for it. American has a total embargo on animal shipping when it is above 85 here, there, and anywhere the flight stops in between. Our current cost of shipping under regular conditions is a flat rate of $260. This includes the air freight, health certificate, and kennel cab. We can fit about 6 babies in a kennel cab together, so if you want to purchase multiple hedgies (or go in with a "shipping buddy" and split costs) it becomes much more cost effective. When we have to use the specialized priority pet services, due to weather or no formal shipping station on your end, that increases the total cost to $340 for shipping. That is in addition to the cost of the hedgie (s). Please note that we can not ship to CA, GA, HI, ME, VT, or PA because hedgehogs are illegal in these states. Want to see how we ship hedgies? Please see our hedgie air travel page (click here) for more details! In addition, our air travel FAQ page may answer other questions you have about shipping. We used to maintain a list of airports that we can ship to, but with the constantly changing flights and regulations, that became nearly impossible. So, if you want to figure out your closest airport that can accept pets, first find out if the airport can support the big jets, like the airbus or 700 series. These are equipped to carry animals. The express/commuter flights are not. All of the international airports are equipped for this, most of the small, regional airports are not. If you email me, I can help check for available flights. Some airports we ship to several times per year and should have flights that can accept animals include Houston (IAH), Dallas (DFW), Newark (EWR), LaGuardia (LGA), Chicago (ORD), Seattle (SEA), Portland, OR (PDX), Boston (BOS), Raleigh/Durham (RDU), Memphis (MEM), Las Vegas (LAS), Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP), Salt Lake City (SLC), and Albuquerque (ABQ).
