What To Expect At A Hedgehog Show

The International Hedgehog Association (IHA) sanctions several hedgehog shows every year. These shows have several purposes: education, camaraderie, fun, and promotion of quality in breeding programs all go hand in hand.

Many hedgehog shows include seminars, where speakers present on specific topics. Seminars I have seen at past shows include veterinary care, hedgehogs and the Internet, safety issues, hedgehogs and mental health, and hedgehog nutrition. Education also takes place at the show table. The judges talk about the animals as they work, discussing differences, explaining things about color, and so on. And, there is much education to be had by talking to other show goers. Many people who are at shows are quite experienced, and very happy to tell people ALL about their favorite critter.

Camaraderie is an important aspect of hedgehog shows. People come to cement old friendships and make new ones. Many hedgehog fans belong to mailing lists and other forms of communities on the Internet and are excited to put faces with names. Don’t worry that it’s a clique, they are always looking for fellow hedgiephiles to welcome to the fold!

Fun is always on everybody’s mind. At some shows, they have pot lucks before or after the show, and at others there are gatherings at local restaurants. Many shows feature fun competitions, such as hedgie sporting events, costume contests, and classes like friendliest hedgie or funniest hedgie. A hedgie doesn’t have to have perfect conformation to go home with a ribbon!

The IHA show system itself promotes quality in breeding standards. Thirty-three percent of the 100 points allotted are for temperament. The rest of the points go for generally good flow and form. The body style that is preferred has been correlated with greater longevity in preliminary studies. Breeders also have the opportunity to talk with each other and share husbandry practices, learning new things to improve their husbandry.

Whether you’re an experienced hedgehog pro or just interested in learning more, you’re sure to have a great time at an IHA show! For more information about shows, check the IHA website Can’t wait to see you there!
