Fourth Annual

Iola Hedgehog Fest

This year we held the world's first Hedgehog Appreciation Ceremony.

After handing out paper and pens to participants, Tig Means-Burleson explains that this ceremony is an opportunity to show our appreciation of what hedgehogs mean in our lives, what our community of hedgehog enthusiasts mean to us, as well as what we as a community mean to our hedgehogs.

Participants think about what to write as Tig encourages them to put their thoughts on paper.

Tig lights the first candle, representing her appreciation, and places it in the sand tray, after reading her card and placing it on the table.

Tig helps Seph with her candle.

Nancy Thomas reads her card.

Next, Darwin Godemann shared his thoughts.

Jane Kuta lit the next candle.

Brenda Sandoval (who has the world's greatest hedgehog sweater, as you can see) was the next to share.

Nancy Cisneros (who, being from Panama, technically came from the furthest to be here) shared her thoughts in Spanish. Nancy had never heard of hedgehogs before coming to live as an exchange student with the Burleson/Hedgehog Valley family this semester!

Cindy Hesse shared that she was grateful to be here- she lives locally and never even realized there had been 3 Iola Hedgehog Fests before this one!

Penni Godemann shared her thoughts next.

Sarah Shore was next.

Floyd Aprill  lit his candle and commemorated his recently departed companion, Baby Hoglet.

Lance Burleson also lit a candle, and one was lit on behalf of Paula Willson of Malawi (in Africa), who has the fantastic opportunity of working with wild hedgehogs in their natural habitat.
